Sita Navami is observed on the Navami tithi (9th day) of the Shukla Paksha in the Hindu month of Vaishakha month because Goddess Sita was born on Navami and she got married to Lord Rama who was also born on the same day during the Shukla Paksha of the month of Chaitra. Vaishnavites celebrate this day during Krishna Paksha of Phalgun month or Magh month. According to the Hindu calendar this festival falls exactly a month after Sri Rama Navami.

Who is Goddess Sita is celebrated?

Goddess Sita, wife of Lord Rama, she is also called incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi. Goddess Sita is known for her trust, loyalty, self-sacrifice, dedication, purity, determination, forgiveness, openheartedness, gratitude and courage. She is born to Queen Sunayna and King Janaka, the king of Mithila. One day, King Janaka was preparing land. He was ploughing the land to conduct a Yajna. There he found a baby girl in the Golden casket. The ploughed land was called Sita Janmbhumi, hence King Janaka named the baby girl as Sita. It is also said that Goddess Sita is incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi. Sita means 'furrow'. She is prayed by a million numbers of people. Goddess Sita is also called as mortals or mother of gods and all living beings. The followers are blessed with growth, intelligence, power, loyalty and prosperity. Godess Sita symbolizes purity and fertility.

How is Sita Navami celebrated/ Rituals and customs that should be performed on Sita Navami

A puja place is made with four pillars. Idols of King Janak, Mata Sunayana God Ram and Goddess Sita are placed. Til, rice and barley is used to perform Sita Navami puja. Legends of life of Devi Sita are read and other stories inspired by her life are read on this day.

In temples, Darshan, Arati and Maha-abhishek are performed. Yatra are done by taking idols of Goddess Sita, Lord Rama Hanuman and Lakshmana. Ramayana is read by sitting in groups in nearby temple. Bhajan Kirtan and aatris are done on this occasion.
